Amgalan Vankirk, formally known as A.W., has been a standout wrestler in the heavyweight division for the royals. Through hard work and resilience, VanKirk has been ready for Varsity level wrestling his whole career. What may come to a shock to some is VanKirk’s age. VanKirk has done what many young athletes dream of, starting at the varsity level as a freshman in multiple sports.
This may be intimidating to many, but how he approaches the game mentally allows him to be ready for any opponent. “At first I was hesitant knowing I would be wrestling opponents at 285 but once I got comfortable, I started to pick up wins and ended 25-11”. VanKirk finished the regular season with an overall record of 26 wins and 15 losses, and contributed to many teams wins this season.
Wrestling in the heavyweight division is a tall task for anyone, let alone a freshman. VanKirk has fought through opponents nearly 30 pounds heavier and 4 years older. Through all though opponents A.W always keeps a positive attitude, “Wrestling is the most mental sport out there, on big tournaments I try not to overthink and get in my head. I just go out there and perform.”
VanKirk is not completely foreign to playing at the varsity level, He started at Defensive Tackle for the Royals in fall. His season was cut short due to a foot injury. “After my ankle injury I knew it was going to be an uphill battle to transition into wrestling. I was constantly doing recovery and visiting the trainers everyday after school. An ankle injury in wrestling is also not convenient. You need all the ankle mobility you have so taping it up wasn’t an option. After a while things started to feel more natural on the mat and knew I was back to 100%”.
Though he is a special talent on the mat, he also takes pride in being a great teammate. “A.W is a hard worker but also takes pride in being a great friend to everyone” one of his teammates said. Senior Aiden Smalley describes him as a selfless teammate and cares deeply about others.
A.W will compete this Saturday at New Castle Field House in the IHSAA Semi-State tournament, where he will fight to qualify for his spot in the State tournament.
