On February 15 the HSE Boys Varsity Wrestling will compete in the IHSAA semi-state meet at New Castle .
The work and preparation to get to this point is beyond what many students and athletes must do in their high school career. These athletes that have made it to this point are the top of their class. With a day in day out training regimen. From early morning workouts to restricting their eating just to make weight and everything in between. Semi-state has been a goal of the royals from the beginning of the season.
Personally qualifying for Semi State was an expectation for not just me but for my teammates. We have a high standard in our room and semi state is a steppingstone to our ultimate goal of state”, Hicks said.
Landon and the rest of the team express that semi-state/state is the standard for the royals, he explains that making it to semi-state was an expectation of his and the coaches.
“It’s a great honor to go out there and have HSE on your singlet. There’s a rich history of hard work and dedication from these legacy older classes of wrestlers left for us and I’m hoping to leave for others”, Lawhead stated.
Evan Lawhead similarly to Landon dished out that the hard work and dedication of the royals is nothing new and that has been in the program as long as it has been here. He speaks of how the legacy of the royals is the reason that he is where he is today.
“Obviously I’m a little nervous going into it since if I lose my career is over but I’m confident in my skills to get me to state and my ability to pull off upsets in matches where I’m the underdog”, Hicks said.
Landon’s emotion that he shows is the emotion of the whole team. If a Wrestler looses his season is over all the work and preparation for this moment, but If he wins he brings pride to the school and program.
