For many, swimming begins as a basic life skill—a precautionary measure in case of emergencies. But for Derek Robison, what started as a simple lesson soon evolved into a deep passion for competitive swimming. The thrill of racing, the pursuit of excellence, and the camaraderie of the sport quickly turned his initial interest into a serious commitment to competition.
Specializing in the 50 Free, 100 Free, and 100 Fly, Derek has encountered numerous challenges along his journey. One of the greatest obstacles has been maintaining discipline and motivation. “It is very easy to just let your mind wander during a practice,” he admits. However, staying engaged and continuously pushing his limits has been essential to his progress as a competitive swimmer.
Like many elite athletes, Derek draws inspiration from the best. Caeleb Dressel serves as his role model, exemplifying the dedication and work ethic required to compete at the highest level. When training sessions become intense, Derek finds motivation through friendly rivalries with his teammates, using competition as a driving force to improve.
Derek’s commitment to competitive swimming began before high school when he joined the HSE swim club team at the age of 12. Years of rigorous training and unwavering determination have fueled his growth in the sport. As he continues to refine his skills and strive for excellence, Derek remains focused on his goals, embracing the challenges and triumphs that come with being a competitive swimmer.
