Forever #15: Mason Alexander

Recounting Events: March 1-4

On Saturday, March 1, there was a car accident involving two HHS students. HHS senior Mason Alexander died in this accident. He will be remembered as #15 on the Varsity football team, as a track-team member, and a “larger than life personality who was not afraid of the spotlight,” Athletic Director Jim Self said. “An unbelievably talented athlete who seemed to always find the camera, whether it was on the football field or in track, [who] had a smile that could light up a room”.

On Monday, March 3, a balloon release rememberance was held after-school on the football pitch at 5:15pm EST to mourn Alexander’s passing. Approximately 3,000 people showed up to the event including family, friends, team-mates, colleagues, teachers and community members, highlighting Alexander’s wide impact on the school and surrounding community. The scoreboard was changed to show “15” on all aspects of the screen and a variety of balloon types were handed out which included blue and white for the Royals, stars, 15s, and football-shapes amongst others.

On Tuesday, March 4, a special edition of the school’s news program, The Royal Rundown, was released on the southeasternmedianetwork website and to the associated Youtube channel (embedded below) to provide insight into who Alexander was and what school supports are currently in place for those grieving.

Furthermore, this year the Sceptre yearbook included a memorial message for Alexander which will be released in May of this year.

At this time there is no school knowledge of funeral arrangements or further rememberance activities.

As a closing note, head varsity football coach Michael Kelly leaves us with this: “Mason is a devastating loss. He was a special young man who touched the lives of everyone he met. He’s smile, presence, and energy were contagious,” Kelly said. “He was a tremendous athlete but more importantly he was a better person. Our memories will always be of the smiles and laughter he brought”.
