Following his remarkable first season as part of the Varsity Boys Golf Team, Dane Starnes has set a culture and new expectations for himself and his teammates. Dane Starnes is coming off his freshman season on the Varsity Boys Golf Team as the IHSAA Regional Champion and is starting his sophomore year as a pillar to the Varsity Boys Golf Team.
Prior to the season’s start, we conducted an interview with sophomore Dane Starnes on his offseason work and progression ahead of his second season on the team. When asked about how he structured his practice sessions to stay consistent during the offseason, Starnes responded, “I tried my best to constantly practice during the offseason. Whether that was practicing in my garage or going outside whenever it was over 40 degrees to work on things you can’t work on inside, such as putting and chipping. This winter I really tried to improve my golf swing as much as I could.” Starnes has shown incredible dedication all offseason.
Starnes has shared his incredible motivation ahead of his sophomore season. Starnes had an itch all offseason to play his best golf. The thrill of competition and low scores kept Starnes focused and motivated, waiting for the moment he could step on the course once again. When asked about his motivation, Starnes replied “I stay motivated to practice during the winter by just thinking about the season starting and how much more fun it would be if I played great golf.” Starnes continued, “I’m excited to bring a whole different skill set to the team and a constant varsity player based on my winter improvements.” Starnes put a heavy emphasis on what he expects next season form himself.
After proving himself freshman year, Starnes enters his sophomore year with higher expectations and new ambitions. He wasn’t just trying to maintain his spot on varsity—he wanted to dominate. “I expect myself to stay on varsity all season, and my goals are to win an invitational and be awarded all-state honors,” Starnes said. “I feel I did what’s necessary for me to have a great year not only for myself but to help the team win a state championship.” Dane Starnes has high hopes for the Boys Golf Team in 2025.
