Balancing two sports isn’t easy, but for Kaleah McCarter, it’s become part of her everyday routine. The freshman pitcher not only spends time on the softball field but also competes on the track.
The transition to high school can already be tough, but adding two sports brings even more of a challenge. “In the beginning, I felt a lot of pressure trying to do both sports at a high level,” Kaleah says. “But after a couple of weeks, I started to get into a rhythm of how to train for both throughout the week.”
Kaleah has learned to manage her time to make it all possible. “I try to do as much homework as I can during study hall or in the locker room before a game or meet,” she says. While balancing school, softball, and track, she makes the most of every minute. “Balancing the sports is easier when I don’t have to worry about homework.” Finding time to complete schoolwork and planning ahead makes it all manageable.
She’s not balancing everything alone. Her coaches recognize the importance of her dual commitment and have worked with her to create a flexible schedule. When there’s an overlap, Kaleah explains, “Whichever one is more important takes priority, like a conference game or a meet.”
Both softball and track are team-oriented sports, and her teammates fully support her, no matter where she is. “They are always supportive of my decisions,” Kaleah says. Her teammates understand the demands of competing in two sports and always want what’s best for her.
It’s not just mentally demanding, it’s physically challenging too. Kaleah has learned how important it is to take care of her body. “I take care of myself to be able to succeed in my sports,” she says. The physical toll may be tough, but it’s something she’s learned to adapt to.
Despite the pressure and packed schedule, the rewards are clear. Kaleah stays motivated by focusing on the future. “I always just think about the opportunities ahead of me,” she says. “Even if a game or meet doesn’t go my way, I get to try again in the next one.”
