Hamilton Southeastern Boys Volleyball’s post-season was ended by a straight-set defeat to rival Fishers High School in the sectional game. The score was 26-16 in the first set, a close second set of 26-24, and the last set 25-18. In an extremely intense and emotional matchup, the Royals fought hard but could not upset a crisp and well-disciplined Fishers squad.
The loss closed out a season that had been so promising from beginning to end. HSE entered sectionals with some steam, but Fishers was simply too powerful, controlling the tempo from the initial serve and taking advantage of critical opportunities.
Despite the outcome, there was much to be proud of with the Royals. Over the past few years, the program has seen steady improvement and consistent competitiveness. The loss doesn’t take away from the progress achieved or the legacy of this year’s team.
Libero Sean Smart reflected on the experience and all that the program has provided for him over the years.
“I have a favorite memory when we won the Metro tournament my first year,” Sean said. “I was JV1, and we had just the most insane mix of personalities that somehow meshed. When we won, everyone rushed the court—our team, other teams—everyone was just high-fiving each other. It was incredible.”
In the future, Sean hopes the up-and-coming players in the program will have that same passion and drive.
“If everyone really buys into what the program is about, they’ll learn so much more than just volleyball,” he said. “You develop real relationships—with teammates, coaches, even refs—that last a lifetime.”
Sean also emphasized hustle and attitude.
“We just wanted to make a statement—show the younger guys what it looks like to leave it all out there and enjoy the process, even when the outcome doesn’t go your way.”
