Senior Sloane May is a star forward committed to play college soccer at Michigan next fall. May is an essential piece in the Royals 9-0 start, as the team looks to achieve their second straight undefeated regular season. Through 9 games, May has assisted 10 goals and scored 6 more. Her performances so far this season helped her win SSN Athlete of the Week.
During this season and throughout May’s high school career, she has tallied more assists than goals. May says she has “been blessed to play with very talented players who specialize in finishing and scoring,” allowing her to “train and become more of a facilitator all while working on being a scoring threat as well.”
May says she appreciates being able to score and used to have a score first mentality, but she has now “adjusted to [her] environment” and she “loves to [see her] best friends be successful.”
Friendship, teamwork, and family are all keys to May’s success. Sloane May’s younger sister, Sydney, is one of her partners in crime at forward for the Royals.
“Having my younger sister makes the experience so fun” Sloane said. “Our collaboration up top can be threatening for other teams and celebrating with her is my favorite thing.”
Celebrating is something this year’s girls have become familiar to, and they look to do more of that throughout this season. May says the team has some big goals, including a Sectional, Regional, and State Championship.
To achieve these goals, May emphasizes “we will have to stay true to what our team values” and “[continue] to practice the right things… We play together as often as possible to heighten our team collaboration, and we train as game like as possible.”
May says her hard work and determination comes from watching her parents set an example. May has been playing soccer for 13 years and says the consistency she learned is what has led to her greatest success.
May’s growth has been instrumental, and she says she is blessed to have the opportunity to play Division 1 soccer at the next level. May committed to the Wolverines program back in June of 2024 and says she is thankful for the preparation that HSE soccer has given her.
“I feel like [our team] is very similar to college because we are not afraid to compete and push each other to get better” May said. “I have played with various types of players [at HSE] which helps me be more versatile and ready for various players at Michigan.”
May’s personal achievements set her apart, but she credits her parents and God for the opportunities she’s been given.
Amid her senior season, May stays focused on what the team needs, saying “My personal goals are to be a great friend and leader to all my teammates. As well as helping my team to win a state championship.”
As the season advances, May is determined to not just cement her legacy, but to help lead HSE girls’ soccer to glory. This season is all she has before she turns the page to her next chapter, Ann Arbor.
