The Class of 2026 boys tennis team has many great leaders who have laid the foundation for the team’s future. One of those leaders is Ian Ransom, a key contributor to the boys tennis team.
Ransom, now a senior, is known as a culture builder at HSE.
“Being a senior means being part of the leading class,” Ransom said. “It means sharing with the underclassmen the culture of our team and helping them on and off the court. We really have a great senior class filled with leaders, and I love helping foster the strength and leadership in the younger guys on the team.”
Ransom’s high energy and enthusiasm have had a noticeable impact on his teammates throughout his high school career.
“Ian demonstrates strong vocal leadership by constantly encouraging his teammates and keeping the energy high,” said head coach Douglas Gernert. “His positive energy lifts the entire team, helping everyone play with more confidence and making those around him better.”
On the court, Ransom has set a high standard of effort and attitude—and he expects the same from his teammates.
“From the underclassmen, I want them to really engage with the team and the program. Get to know your coaches and teammates because those relationships are what make your tennis experience,” Ransom said. “Ask questions, learn as much as you can, and show your effort, attitude and hustle.”
The Royals tennis team holds a high standard of accountability, particularly when it comes to pre-match routines. One day, when the team forgot to do their usual three claps and shout “Royals” before an exercise, Ransom stepped in and had them do it again.
The team also supports each other from the sidelines, and Ransom consistently makes sure that teammates who aren’t competing are cheering just as loud.
The future of the Royals tennis program is something Ransom deeply values.
“He includes everybody—from the freshmen to the seniors,” said doubles teammate Max Weinberger. “He’s a huge part of the inclusive culture that we’ve built on the tennis team.”
