Girls Mudsock Game
Few matchups ignite school spirit like the Mudsock girls’ soccer game between Hamilton Southeastern High School and Fishers High School. Part of the larger Mudsock Trophy competition that spans nearly 20 sports, the girls’ soccer game has become a highlight of the fall season, drawing students, alumni, and families to attend the rivalry match. The atmosphere of a Mudsock game is like no other, which contributes to the uniqueness of the Mudsock Rivalry.
“I think HSE vs Fishers is more special than other games,” junior defender Bailey Sapp said, “Because there are lots of other sports teams that came to watch and support us at our game.”
The name “Mudsock” comes from Fishers’ history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, heavy rains turned local streets and fields into sticky mud, leaving people and horses with what looked like “mud socks” on their feet. Today, the name symbolizes rivalry, competition, and an event where both sides of Fishers can come together and enjoy sports.
Each match has been a pivotal point in Mudsock standings. As a result, there comes a lot of pressure every year regarding this game in specific. Many athletes consider the Mudsock to be the biggest game of the season. Athletes must make sure preparation is on point for big games like this one.
“I prepare for big games by just thinking it’s like any other conference game, but we are just playing for a trophy this time,” Sapp shared.
Over the years, the rivalry has produced thrilling matches, from narrow victories to tense ties, to blowouts, Mudsock can be unpredictable. Each contest is a showcase of teamwork, skill, and determination, reflecting the dedication both programs bring to the field.
Win or Lose, Mudsock for Girls Soccer will continue to be a captivating rivalry and tradition for Fishers. The rivalry will forever bond the community.
“The energy overall was insane everyone was cheering us on,” Sapp said, “And it made our team want to play even harder than we were.”
