For the past four years, Southeastern Sports Network has honored standout athletes with its Athlete of the Week title. Last week, history was made when senior Janelle Garcia and junior Sophie Roberts became the first-ever co-Athletes of the Week.
The recognition followed an unforgettable week for Girls Golf. Garcia captured the sectional championship, while Roberts followed with a regional title, marking a record-breaking moment for the program.
“It’s definitely an honor to be recognized, especially as the first co-athletes of the week,” Garcia said. “It means a lot to see our work noticed.”
Roberts agreed. “It means a lot to me to get to do it along with someone that I truly look up to as a person and an athlete,” she said. “We both accomplished amazing things that week, and it felt great that we were both recognized for it.”
Both golfers faced mental and physical challenges during their tournaments. At sectionals, Garcia persevered through constant rain that tested her patience and focus.
“One of the biggest challenges was the rain we had that day, which lasted the whole round,” she said. “I just tried to stay in my rhythm like I do in every match and maintain a positive mindset.”
Despite weather delays, Garcia’s spirits stayed high. “We had an hour delay, so we partied to some music and had fun together,” Garcia said. “It was incredible to see that everyone didn’t let the bad weather get into their heads. It’s a memorable moment for the team because it’s been a while since we’ve won sectionals!”
At regionals, Roberts maintained her composure on a challenging course. “During my round, I was mainly focused on having a fun day and staying levelheaded,” she said. “On the last three holes, I got stuck behind a tree and had to hit a tough shot. I missed the putt but knew I could get it back within the last two holes.”
When her round ended, Roberts wasn’t sure if she had won. “There were a lot of good players, but after shooting 4 under, I knew I had a really good shot,” she said. “When my parents hugged me, it was almost like I had already won in their minds, which meant a lot.”
“Golf is an individual sport, so sharing the recognition feels special and is an amazing way to celebrate it,” Garcia added.
