For many athletes, their journey begins randomly, and for senior Olivia Moorman, her cheerleading story is no different.
“I began doing cheer because one of my friends influenced me to go to one of HSE’s open gyms.” Moorman said.
Despite having little tumbling experience, her determination led to her mastering a standing back tuck. Now, four years into competition cheerleading, she’s not only a key member of the team, but also a team captain who serves as a role model for her peers.
Cheerleading isn’t just a sport for Moorman.
“Cheer is so important to me because it is like a second family,” Moorman said. “My girls have helped me through all of my ups and downs, and cheer is a place for me to escape real life.”
The camaraderie within the teams is more than just teammates working together—it’s built on trust, “Stunting creates a lot of trust since we are keeping a flyer safe in the air.” Moorman said.
Being a leader comes naturally to Moorman.
“[Being a team captain] means being there for all the girls in the HSE football competition cheer program,” Moorman said. “I want to be a leader for my teammates that they know they can trust when they have any issues or just need someone to talk to.”
Handling multiple teams—football, basketball, and competition cheer—can be challenging, but Moorman has found a way to balance it all.
“It takes up a lot of time, but I make sure to utilize bus rides, study halls, pathways, and any free periods to stay on top of my homework.” Moorman said.
Preparation and practice are keys to success, and cheerleading is no exception. Learning routines can take anywhere from one six-hour practice, to several four to six-hour sessions, depending on the difficulty. But the hard work is all worth it when it comes to the competition. Winning state and advancing to finals at nationals are among the biggest goals for the 24-25 season.
“[For competition cheer] I’m most excited for Nationals and being able to travel to Florida to represent HSE,” said Moorman.
Balancing the demands of multiple teams, schoolwork, and personal time isn’t easy, but for Moorman, it’s the love of cheer and the bond she shares with her teammates that keeps her going.
“On our team, we all are like sisters. Maintaining camaraderie has become natural for us because we all trust each other.” Moorman said.
Moorman is ready to face whatever challenges come her way. With goals, a united team, and the support of her cheer family, she’s prepared for any occasion and will continue making an impact on and off the mat.
