Cole Lance, a senior captain and midfielder for the girls’ soccer team, has had a standout season, earning Athlete of the Week for September 2-7, 2024. With 4 goals and 5 assists so far, she has played a key role in leading the team to an undefeated record and the number one state ranking. Known for her work ethic, Lance consistently wears down her opponents, and her skill in both passing and ball control has made her a crucial playmaker. However, Lance’s success isn’t just about stats, it’s her leadership, confidence, and connection with her teammates that set her apart.
“I have played soccer since I was eight,” Lance said. “I’m super grateful that the majority of my teammates now, I have grown up with. They were on my team since I started at such a young age. My favorite memories have all been with them, and we continue to make the best memories today.”
Reflecting on her senior year, Lance’s favorite moments aren’t about goals or big wins, but the time she’s spent with her teammates.
“My most memorable moments [this season] were traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for an overnight. This time together is so valuable, and it’s when we grow the most connections,” Lance said. “Our team is so incredibly close, which comes with many advantages for us. I am forever grateful for the bond we have created together, and it’s super rare for a team to get along so well. This definitely plays into our success this year.”
This bond allows the team to play for one another rather than as individuals, and has clearly contributed to their chemistry on the field and undefeated record.
Lance’s growth as a leader has been deeply rooted in confidence.
“Confidence is 75% of the game,” Lance said. “My sophomore and junior years were more about learning, but coming off of junior year, I learned what it looked and felt like to be confident. It’s not easy to have confidence, but once you do, your game is changed.”
This transformation into a confident leader hasn’t gone unnoticed. Gracie Pyle, one of Lance’s closest friends and teammates since third grade, highlighted her leadership both on and off the field.
”An inspiring moment I’ve witnessed this season is seeing Cole become captain and really take on the role. She helps our team achieve the goals that we’ve set for ourselves and pushes us to the best of our abilities, all while keeping the game itself so much fun to play,” Pyle said. “She’s always there to lift someone up, and just wants the best for our team.”
Head Coach Greg Davidson echoed this, praising Lance’s work ethic and ability to lead by example.
“She has been both a verbal leader and a nonverbal leader,” Davidson said. “She has also been a calming voice to the team when we could otherwise be frantic on the pitch.”
After high school, Lance will continue her soccer journey at Grand Valley State University. As the team prepares for the playoffs, they are driven by the bond Lance helped create and the confidence she instills. Their first Sectional game against Fishers will take place on Wednesday, October 9th, at 7:30 pm at White River Elementary School in Noblesville.
