Boys Basketball is set to kick off their season this weekend on Saturday against the Pike Red Devils (0-0).
Hamilton Southeastern is a young team, led by the one senior Braeden Totton. Totton was apart of a team last year that beat their preseason expectations, going 15-10 (2-5) in conference. This marked the Royals first winning season since the 2019-2020 covid season and first winning season under John Ashworth since his hire in 2021.
The Royals challenged themselves in the preseason, scheduling the powerhouse of Ben Davis for a scrimmage. The Giants were coming off a State Championship run in 2022 and a Runners Up in 2023. The Result? The Royals defeated them by a score of 56-45. This was a huge confidence boost for HSE’s smallest team in years, in which their tallest player is 6’5.
“We shot the ball really well on Wednesday. We spread it around efficiently, and took advantage of our good 3 point shooters. It definitely was a factor in our win.” said Junior Manager Ryne Hilgendorf.
HSE has a smaller, more athletic team than they have in previous years. They wont be running the offense through their bigs this season, but through their guards.
“We recognized early in the offseason that the strength of this team would be with our ability to space the floor and to have good decision makers on the court together. We will definitely look different than last year, but our kids have really bought in and adapted quickly to a new style.” Said Head Coach John Ashworth.
The Royals are feeling confident heading into their first matchup of the year with the Pike Red Devils, who they defeated last year 68-54. Braeden Totton scored 13 as a Junior to lead the Royals to their victory.
HSE is looking to once again exceed their expectations. Confident players and confident coaches help win games.
