Friday Dec. 13. Basketball Cheerleading. Senior Night. Five weeks into the season, and the work is showing off. From home and away games, long practices and effort, the Varsity Blue and Silver teams have performed at 13 events, cheering on the 10-0 girls’ basketball team and the 1-2 boys’ basketball team.
Nostalgia is defined as wistful affection for the past, typically in a place where you felt happy. In honor of Senior Night, the team’s seniors were asked about some of their favorite experiences over their cheerleading career.
What was your favorite memory of cheering basketball in your time at HSE?
“Cheering the Mudsock game last year when we went into overtime and ended up winning the game.” Catherine Miller said.
“My favorite memory is on the way to away games playing music on the bus and hanging out with the girls.” Ashley Yoder said.
Taylor Mohn also answered that her favorite memory has been “forming connections and building my teammates up, and that there are always constant laughs on the sidelines while showing school spirit and cheering for basketball.”
It’s not always easy to fit in and find your people in such a large school.
“It is nerve wrecking joining a new sport and not knowing anyone, but all the girls were so welcoming,” Japnam Kular said. “It is amazing to not only have them as teammates, but to have them as amazing friends.”
What will you miss most about being an HSE Cheerleader?
“I will miss my teammates and especially my best friends because basketball cheer was what made us so close.” Meadow Williamson said.
“What I will miss most is the second family this program has given me, and I cannot imagine who I would be without them.” Katelyn Kellum said.
“I will miss away games the most, stopping and getting food. Everyone is super close and we are like a family getting to spend time with each other.
Marley Hayes also said that “I will miss team dinners and eating with everyone before games is so fun.
“I will miss the bonds I created with not only my team, but the coaches as well.” Jayden Brumfield said. Allie Smith also replied with I will miss “the people you meet during cheer season and how everyone grows as a person and an athlete.”
