Girls swim and dive works differently than other sports at Hamilton Southeastern. They have different scoring, training, and their close nit relationship with the boys’ team. First, are the scoring differences between swimming and other sports. In swimming, you get cumulative points for each varsity event.
“For individual events” Senior Elle Edison says, “it’s first place that gets six points, second place gets four points, third place gets three points, and then fourth gets two and fifth gets one and for relays its double that.”
Unlike basketball where you could have one person score all your points, everyone must do their part for the Royals to win. It is especially important in the relays due to those being worth double points. The relays must work together and have a bond like no other to be able to secure the most points for Southeastern swim and dive. They hope to capitalize on the relays to maintain their perfect record going into the Mudsock meet.
The boys and girls swim and dive teams have a club season outside of their high school season. After the girls finish up their school season, they will have two weeks to prepare before they start their club swimming. The team only gets four weeks total off between their high school and club seasons and practice almost every morning.
“We get two weeks off after our school season, and then we go straight into club swimming” Edison says when asked about her commitment to the team.
Another key difference between swimming and other sports is the relationship they have with the boys swim and dive team. The girls and boys swim and dives team have shared practices and have the same meets.
“In most sports the girls and the boys” Ellison says, “they don’t practice together and have meets together, and we’re together so that makes us really close.”
With the girls’ swim and dive team having a flawless record approaching their big Mudsock meet, they will be prepared and ready to take down the Fishers Tigers. Make sure to go cheer them on this Thursday at Fishers high school, so we can secure another Mudsock win.
