Senior Abby Brown furiously dribbles the basketball down the court in a fast break. She looks for the open lane to drive and make a layup, but it’s not there. Abby quickly switches to the next best solution, which is to look for the HSE Girls’ basketball team’s best shooters. In this case, it happens to be Maya Makalusky. With precision, Abby promptly passes the ball to Maya, allowing her to make a 3-pointer and putting their team in the lead.
Abby Brown is a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School and an athlete who plays for the Girls’ Basketball team as a center and forward.
Abby plays a vital role on the team as a center and a forward. “We have a lot of really talented players on our team,” she explained. “My role is to get our best shooters their shots.”
When she’s not busy with practice, Abby enjoys participating in Best Buddies, attending Unified Sports, volunteering for National Honors Society, and going to events at her church. With all of those extracurriculars on her plate, one might wonder how she makes time for everything.
According to her, it’s all about making priorities. “I know I’ve had to stay up a little later to do my homework or study for a test because I had a game that night” Abby details. “But it’s really just about managing your time and prioritizing what you need to get done.”
And while she’s a great person on the court, she’s an even better person off the court according to her teammate Ava Kashani. Ava is a Junior on Varsity whose position is a guard.
“…Abby has always been an incredible role model and leader on and off the court,” Ava said. “…she brings unmatched energy every single day, no matter the circumstances; I know there are so many great things ahead of her”.
As for Abby’s future, she says that she hopes to go to Indiana University to pursue nursing, and does not plan to pursue basketball in college. She aspires to become a nurse practitioner, focusing on either pediatrics or emergency health care. But she still has a drive for the sport now and hopes people remember her as someone who was always positive.
And she has a message for young basketball players just starting out in the sport. “It sounds cliché, but don’t give up,” she encourages. “Things are going to get hard but you just have to push through the adversity because that’s where the opportunities come from.”
Abby Brown’s journey on and off the court serves as an inspiring reminder that dedication, positivity, and hard work can lead to success in every aspect of life.
