Sophomore, Josh Horton, is a new student at HSE this year, and a new player on the HSE basketball team. Although he’s new to the team his hard work and determination on the court has not gone unnoticed. He is coming from playing 1 year of Junior Varsity with the Richmond Red Devils who went 2 and 1 during his time playing with them. Even though his sport is the same, the change in environment has led to a new set of challenges and goals for Horton.
Being a new player to a strong bonded team can be a challenge for most any athlete. Feeling on the outside looking in, out of place, or less than, are all common feelings for an athlete on a new team. Horton says he has overcome these challenges by putting himself out there, and not being afraid to get to know his teammates quickly. Now Horton has long-lasting friendships he can continue to build throughout his next 2 years as an HSE Royals basketball player.
Setting goals are crucial for any athlete, especially when you’re entering a new environment. When asked what goal Horton plans to achieve this season he responded saying “I want to end the season with a secure spot on varsity next year”. With his work ethic and the help of his team, this goal could become a reality for Horton.
Being an athlete it’s important to look forward to what the future will hold. Having a “dream big” mindset will help athletes like Horton work 10 times harder to whatever it is they set their mind on. Horton says one thing he’s looking forward to is “continuing his season without any losses”. The feeling that comes with a win after playing a hard game is unmatched, and with a strong mindset and team, hopefully it is a dream Horton will get to achieve this season.
