As the Unified Track and Field season progresses in their season, the Royals already have three meets under their belt. They’ve competed against Hamilton Heights, Fishers, Westfield, Noblesville, and in both conference and county competitions. All these meets have something in common: they prioritize inclusion, sportsmanship, and genuine support over competition.
When the meets begin, the community grows closer, with athletes and fans alike supporting one another.
“Everyone being on the same team is great, because everyone is cheering on each other,” junior partner Brady Roberts said. “Everyone wants to see you succeed regardless of what school you go to.”
At a Unified meet, teams will compete in five events: two field events, and three running events.
The competition begins with the shot put and long jump. After the field events athletes move to the track for the 100-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and the 4×100-meter relay.
From the very first event to the final relay, the cheering comes from anyone, no matter what the name across the front of the jersey was.
“Having people from other schools watching me run makes me feel like I am going to do better,” junior athlete Jack Trant said. “Knowing that no matter what school they are from, they want me to succeed.”
For the partners, seeing the athletes succeed is the goal. Their intent is to make them smile, laugh, and enjoy the sport they are a part of.
“Seeing how excited and accomplished the students are when they finish their races is such an amazing feeling,” junior partner Ava Braz said. “Knowing that I have helped these students, even in the slightest ways, brings me so much joy.”
As the community grows each event, so does the positivity. Athletes are supported by parents, partners, and even opposing teams. The connection built between everyone creates an environment of unity like no other.
“My favorite memory was when Quentin was running the 100, and everyone from all the teams started chanting for him as he crossed the finish line,” senior partner Abby Brown said. “It was just so cool to watch.”
The Unified track and field team will compete in their sectional meet this Saturday, May 24. Come out to support the team and experience the excitement firsthand!
