Endless years of grit and strength was put into getting Evan to the point he is today in his wrestling career. With eight years of wrestling behind him and three years on varsity, this year holds value for Evan, as he is determined to win the state championship.
“My biggest drive is to be a state champion”, said Evan Lawhead. “Ever since I was little that has been THE goal for me.”.
While the goal to win state remains, the mindset needed fluctuates. Evan has expressed that the mental battles can be a make or break. The work ethic is only half of it, but Evan had that mastered since he walked onto the mat freshman year. Although he started his high school wrestling career as an undersized 160 pounder to a 215 pounder, Evan made sure to keep a consistent mindset a priority. He acknowledges that it is not as easy as it sounds, and it comes with challenges.
“I would say by biggest challenge is myself at the end of the day”, said Evan Lawhead. “There is no excuse in this sport, no one you can blame.”.
Winning state will not come on its own and Lawhead plans to use the mental challenges as a motivator. Putting all the pieces together is what it comes down to and the biggest piece Lawhead prioritizes is the mental strength.
