Matthew Billet, a senior at Hamilton Southeastern, reflects on his high school wrestling career.
Matthew Billet’s high schools career in wrestling is coming to an end with his senior season starting. As he progresses into his last season and pivots into life after high school, he looks back on his past experiences and lessons learned.
When Matthew first started, he had to get into the groove of HSE wrestling. Experiences followed as he advanced up, with many lessons being learned the hard way.
Matthew advised to the underclassmen to, “Always bring your best every day. In wrestling, it doesn’t matter if you’re a senior of a freshman.” Matthew also believes that “If you’re the best in your weight class at HSE, you deserve to be the one representing.” Overall, he advises young wrestlers and underclassmen to “keep pushing yourselves and stay dedicated!”
Along with advice, Matthew also shared memories. He explained how his best memory is “all the memories I make with my friends whether it’s inside the wrestling room or not.”He exclaimed on how profound the relationships bonded are. For him, it’s more than just wrestling.
Matthew and others on HSE Boys Wrestling share more than just a common skill. They share memories, laughs, cries, advice, and more. “With wrestling, we have all seen each other at our absolute lowest right before mentally breaking.” Wrestling isn’t just a physical sport, but a mental challenge. Due to this, he emphasizes that “the bond between us is a really good one that not many people have.”
He wraps up by exclaiming how “Wrestling has forever shaped who I am as a person.” He goes onto say that “Without a doubt in my mind, this is the toughest sport high school has to offer.” He concludes that “It has crafted and equipped me with discipline, determination, and a work ethic like none other.”
For Matthew Billet and other HSE Boys Wrestling seniors, the season is coming to an end. With the start of the end, it provides a time to reflect on past memories while looking forward to what’s next.
