Before almost every single boy’s lacrosse game, you will see a circle of lacrosse players kicking a small bag around; this is hacky sack. Hackey sack or most commonly known as “sack” is the game that all the lacrosse players in the nation are suddenly playing everywhere.
Sack started around the 1970s and was originally called footbag. It was created by John Stalberger and Mike Marshall in Oregon. Marshall developed the idea of footbag from a similar kicking game based on Native American traditions. The two friends then introduced a small beanbag that players would kick around that focused on creativity and coordination.
“I think [sack] is popular because it’s easy to do before and after practice, all you need is one sack. There’s a lot of fun packed in that little bag” Senior Tyler Drouin said.
In the lacrosse community, sack has gained popularity dramatically. One of the reasons for its success has been social media. On TikTok, the hashtag; #hackysack has increased by over 330% views in May 2026. It has gained popularity in lacrosse because it is good warmup and helps with foot-eye coordination.
“[Sack] helps a lot with coordination, precision, and focus” Drouin said.
Lacrosse is a very technical sport, and sack has helped many players gain a slight competitive edge. Sack can help you warm up before a game or a practice and loosen your joints. Along with the benefits sack can give you physically, it can help team bonding.
“It provides great team bonding and laughs, as we usually have a bunch of guys in the sack circle” Drouin said.
Sack isn’t just a game they play before lacrosse practice; it’s a lifestyle. Many high school lacrosse teams have made their own sack Instagram pages where they post their best rounds online. Hamilton Southeastern has their own sack Instagram as well (@hse.sack). With many schools creating their own sack Instagram accounts, there has even been the creation of Indiana sack rankings. It’s clear that sack continues to weave its way into lacrosse culture.
“#spreadsacknothate” said Drouin.
