The Boys Track & Field team at Hamilton Southeastern just proved that they are about a lot more than just fast times and long jumps. After a recent meet against Westfield High School, an IHSAA track starter submitted an exemplary sportsmanship report praising the Royals for how they conduct themselves on and off the track.
According to the official report, Hamilton Southeastern athletes spent the entire evening helping move blocks, setting up hurdles, and assisting wherever they could. Instead of just focusing on their own events, the Royals were constantly cheering for their own teammates and their opponents. The official even noted that HSE athletes went out of their way to say thank you to the officials for working the meet.
This kind of recognition does not just happen by accident. It comes down to the culture and leadership on the team. Senior long distance runner Will Henning explained that the team actively prides itself on being good sports, especially when interacting with the people running the meet. “The officials are there giving up their time to help us run the sport we all love,” Henning said. “We might not always agree with the decision, but anything must be challenged respectfully.”
For Henning, having the expectation to be great people makes the team better on the track. He believes that focusing on character brings the team closer together, which ultimately motivates everyone to push each other harder.
As a senior leader, Henning has focused heavily on creating a culture of positivity this season. He makes it a point to shut down any disrespect immediately, but he places an even bigger emphasis on praising the guys who are doing the right things. By celebrating good behavior, the whole HSE team stays focused on the big picture rather than individual goals.
Looking back at his four years at HSE, Henning believes getting recognized for sportsmanship is a massive achievement for the program. “Winning a race is awesome, but it is just a single moment of glory,” Henning said. “Being recognized for sportsmanship shows that the team fosters good men, not just good athletes.” Henning hopes the legacy he leaves behind is one of total unity across the distance, sprint, throw, and field events, proving that HSE is always stronger when everyone supports each other.
