For sophomore JV tennis player Libby Garland, tennis is more than just winning matches. At HSE, Garland balances school, practices, and competition while continuing to grow both in and outside of the court. Long practices and close matches can be stressful, but she says tennis has helped her become more focused and confident.
“Tennis teaches you how to stay calm under pressure,” Garland said. “You learn from your mistakes overtime.”
Although tennis is often seen as an individual sport, Garland says being part of the team is one of the best parts of the season. Whether players are competing or cheering from the sidelines, she believes the support from teammates makes a difference during tough matches.
“I’ve met so many people through tennis,” Garland said. “Everyone pushes each other to get better.”
As a sophomore, Garland continues to improve her game and gain experience with every match she plays. “I want to keep improving and having fun with my team,” she said.
