This year’s Boys Track team had many hurdles to jump over, metaphorically and literally. They excelled in distance showcases, field events, and fast-paced relays. The seniors were a particular group worth noting, as they found themselves completing PR after PR throughout their season.
The entire team is also projected to perform outstandingly at their State Finals this year in early June, and many are expecting record times from notable athletes like Liam Powers, the 4×800 relay runners, and more.
However, the focus was on more than just PRs and records this spring. The team collectively made an effort to make sure their impact was felt for who they were as humans, and the drive for a lasting influence was what truly motivated them to strive for more.
“We are united by the work and leadership that we pour into this group,” said Will Henning, a distance and relay senior, “Our unifying purpose in trying to unite us all was what really brought us close.”
The team was entirely engaged in the challenges that they wanted to achieve, and held a constant mindset of unity, no matter the outcome of their goals. Especially for the class of 2026, it was utterly important to remember who they were, separate from a 400 meter track and number of seconds, and rather who they were becoming as they graduated from their high school experiences.
“I want to be remembered for pushing others to become the best person they can be, not just the best athlete,” Henning said, “I hope that the unity that I have helped build this year continues into the following year’s culture.”
This quote directly shows another aspect of “Kaizen” that the seniors also implemented this year. It was their motto and outlook for everything they accomplished this spring, and they carried it with them through each race. The ultimate goal was to fulfill their own responsibilities and ambitions for the season, and to leave close teammates below them with something to feel, and to never forget who they are.
“I want to be remembered for giving my all, wanting and pushing for the best from others, and for my Royal pride on and off the track,” said Henning, as his one final sign off, heading into State.
