Mattingly Upchurch is looking for the record after finishing just one shot shy of the school record after delivering what he called “the most flawless round of golf” he has ever played.
The standout round featured clutch birdies, an eagle, and steady composure from start to finish, giving both the golfer and his team an early-season confidence boost.
The momentum of the round shifted dramatically on the ninth hole. After making his first eagle of the day, Mattingly found himself at 2-under par and beginning to heat up.
“My first eagle I made on 9 got me to 2 under par, that’s when I caught fire,” he said. From that point forward, he settled into a rhythm that few golfers ever experience.
One of the biggest reasons for the success was his mental approach throughout the day. Rather than focusing on scorecards or records, he stayed locked into each shot and each hole as they came.
“Staying in the moment, nothing thinking about my score and being present,” he explained. That calm mindset helped him avoid mistakes and stay consistent throughout the entire round.
What made the performance even more impressive was the lack of any major errors. The senior managed to avoid a single bogey all day, something that is incredibly difficult to do at the high school level. “That I didn’t make a single bogey. It was the most flawless round of golf I think I’ve ever played,” he said. His steady play kept him within reach of history until the final hole.
It was not until the walk up the 18th fairway that the reality of the moment fully hit him. “It wasn’t until walking up 18 fairway with Dy and I just said I need an eagle here to break the school record,” he said.
Although he came up just short, the round still cemented itself as one of the best performances in recent school history.
Even without the record, Mattingly still believes the round could have a major impact moving forward, both personally and for the team. “coming so hot early in the year helps not just my momentum but the team’s as well,” he said. He gave credit to his teammates in his improvements this year. “Just working at the same things when I’m by myself and being committed to what I’m doing to improve my game.” Mattingly is certainly determined to get that school record, but more importantly focusing on his teammates to create something bigger than themselves.
