The Girls Lacrosse season has finally started! It’s time for late night games, crowds going wild, and players working hard to be the best. But for the seniors it’s their last season to try things out they haven’t been able to this year, to be the best they have so they can leave knowing they accomplished all that they wanted to.
“One of my personal goals for this season is to be a better leader,” senior Allison Funk said. “As a senior, I want to be a good influence toward the other players so they can continue to learn and grow.”
Being a senior, you are at the top of the chain, most have been there for the longest and you are the one that the younger players look up to. When the senior’s graduate the hope they did as much as they could to leave a positive legacy behind.
“I want to make sure the younger players remember that supporting your teammates, even if they make mistakes, is important to making a good team,” Funk said.
Sydney Walker shares a similar mindset as she enters her final season.
Walker said. “Leadership isn’t just about being the best but the effort you have each day and the way you lift your team.”
Walker hopes younger players remember the importance of working hard and supporting one another through both wins and losses.
Along with leadership, both seniors also have individual goals they want to accomplish before the season ends. Walker is focused on improving her clearing game and being able to throw the ball farther down the field, while Funk hopes to build more confidence during games.
Every season each team has their breakout players. The athletes who have improved thier skills, stepped up and made a big impact. According to both seniors, one player to watch this year is Makenna Metrick.
“She is very dedicated this year and has improved a lot on both offense and defense,” Funk said.
Walker also believes Metrick will be a key leader for the team.
“She has been playing for a few years and is going to play in college as well,” Walker said. “She is a team leader and always there when I have questions about anything.”
As the season starts, the players have thier games they look forward to. in most sports its the mudsock game. the day to face our rival school, Fishers, and hope to win.
“I’m most excited for our Fishers game because they are our biggest rival,” Funk said.
Walker is also looking forward to that matchup, especially because it is also senior night.
“The game I’m most excited for is May 2. It’s our senior day against Fishers,” Walker said.
With strong leadership and team chemistry, both seniors believe the team has the potential to go far this season.
“I think we will make it to state,” Walker said. “We have a hardworking group, and everyone is committed to getting better every day.”
Funk agrees.
“I think we have the potential to make it to state,” she said. “If we stay focused on improving together, we have a great chance.”
For the seniors, this season is about more than just wins and losses. It’s about leadership, growth, and leaving a lasting impact on the program before they pass the torch to the next generation of players.
