Long before the starting gun fires and the crowd turns its attention to the track, there is a different level of preparation taking place. Equipment is checked, stations are set, and every stat of every athlete is accounted for endless hours in advance. These quiet, often unnoticed moments is when the foundation of a successful meet and team is built work that rarely earns recognition but is essential every time athletes’ step onto the track.
While it may be human nature to focus on the athletes and the action of the sport itself, many people subconsciously overlook the individuals who work behind the scenes to keep meets and seasons running smoothly, ultimately making success possible in ways that often go unnoticed. For Senior Girls Track and Field Manager, Chi Chi Nwokorie, being a manager has been a fundamental role in her high school career.
“I decided to become a manager because I knew I wanted a future in sports and wanted to be part of a team environment.”, said Nwokorie, “I’ve always enjoyed helping others, and this felt like a great way to support the athletes and coaches while still being involved in something important.”.
Nwokories role quickly developed into something much greater than she had in mind. Although she knew it was paving a way towards her future in sports, she never realized how impactful it would be to her individual growth. Stepping into this role was never just about a position, it was about finding a place within something meaningful.
“This experience has taught me a lot about responsibility, communication, and staying organized.”, said Nwokorie, “Being a manager means people count on you, so I’ve learned how important it is to be dependable and ready to help whenever needed.”.
These teachings and findings that came with being a manager allowed Nwokorie to recognize her significance in being a part of this team. However, this didn’t happen alone, the team and coaches became her niche and many friendships, memories and accomplishments that extended beyond the track showed her she was important to this team.
“Being part of such a successful team is inspiring because I’m surrounded by people who are dedicated and always striving to do their best.”, said Nwokorie, “It makes me proud to be a part of something so strong and respected.”.
The athletes are rewarded for their hard work through trophies and ribbons while the endless hours dedicated behind the scenes from Nwokorie never reach an audience outside of the team. Furthermore, a unique perspective comes with this silence.
“A lot of people only see the meets and performances, but there is so much preparation that happens beforehand.”, said Nwokorie, “It can be busy at times, but it’s worth it knowing that I’m helping the team.”.
Looking ahead, Nwokorie proudly gets to use this experience to credit what has shaped her as a person and prepared her for the future. Leaving this position behind won’t be an easy goodbye for Nwokorie in just a few short months from now, although, she is able to shine a light on this often-unseen role to those following her footsteps.
“I would want people to know that being a manager is a very important role, even if it is sometimes overlooked.”, said Nwokorie, “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be involved and it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school career.”.
