Unified Track is meant to bring both regular students and students in special programs here at school together and have fun. More than that, getting to know each other and building relationships are just as important along with respect and kindness on the track. Even though Unified is not as competitive as some of the sports here at Hamilton Southeastern, here are some ways how you can be supportive and cheer on our Royals at Unified track meets this season.
Coming directly from a member of Unified Track, Athziri Santiago-Lemus, one of the best ways to cheer for the students on Unified is by learning their names. “When an athlete is running the 100-meter dash and someone in the stands yells their name, it can motivate them to run faster and keep pushing to the finish line.” She also emphasizes how simple quotes can influence the athletes as well and how just keeping a healthy environment is best by writing, “Another awesome way to cheer for our athletes is by simply saying “You got this!” “Great Job!” or even “Keep Going!” can work.” Santiago continues writing, “It can truly make a difference in the length of their jump, how far their shot put landed, how fast they ran, etc.”
Head coach of Unified Track, Coach Moosbrugger, also provides good information on how to cheer at the meets. He writes, “Nine times out of ten, we cheer just as loud for our Unified kids as we would cheer for anyone else because they love the praise.” Coach Moosbrugger also describes the importance of being quite for those who are sensitive to loud sounds by providing an example from past meets. “We have had moments where we had to be completely silent before she would do her long jump.” Coach Moosbrugger finalizes his response with, “I believe it comes down to recognizing and respecting everyone the same way and keeping everything positive.”
Overall, both the experience and emotions expressed and felt at Unified track is very positive und uplifting. Hopefully, anyone reading this shows up for a meet and experiences this too. Good luck to Unified and all other athletes this spring!
