Last season, Hamilton Southeastern made it to the semifinals at nationals in jazz, won Pom regional championships, and placed fifth in both pom and jazz at the state competition. However, those accomplishments came with a major change afterward. The team graduated six seniors, who made up half of the varsity roster and served as many of the team’s leaders.
“We lost a lot of people who really guided us,” sophomore dancer Ava Swedarsky said. “This year we’re younger, so people don’t really know what to expect from us.”
Because of the team’s youth, some competitors and spectators have underestimated Hamilton Southeastern this season. That doubt is amplified by the high level of competition in their area with powerful teams and tough rivals.
“There are a lot of really strong teams where we compete,” Swedarsky said. “Every competition feels like a challenge, especially when you know people are watching to see if you can keep up.”
Despite the loss of seniors, new leaders have stepped up to help guide the team. Swedarsky pointed to Senior teammate Lila Oliver as someone who has stepped into a leadership role during a year of transition.
“She’s an all-around great dancer and teammate,” Swedarsky said. “No matter if we have a hard practice or a good practice, she’s always there for us and keeps everyone focused.”
Behind the scenes, the season has not been easy. The team has faced several injuries (even though it’s the start of the season), forcing dancers to adjust routines and push through difficult practices while supporting injured teammates.
“There have been a lot of injuries this year,” Swedarsky said. “It’s been hard, but we know that if we work hard and recover, we’ll end up healthy when it matters most.”
What continues to motivate the team is a mindset of constant improvement. Instead of focusing on placements or outside opinions, the dancers aim to get better every day.
“We always try to go one percent harder,” Swedarsky said. “We never settle for a place. We just want to keep improving and reach the top.”
As the season continues, Hamilton Southeastern’s young dance team is embracing the underdog label. With determination, new leadership and a drive to grow, the Royals are working to prove that they are more than just a young team, they want to prove that they’re the best.
