As girls swim and dive sectionals approaches, Hamilton Southeastern’s girls swim and dive team’s focus is at an all-time high. Sectionals are set to begin February 5th at Fishers High School, marking the beginning of the postseason.
“Our primary goal at Sectionals is simple: to be at our best when our best is required.” Said Coach Jeff Thompson. The team’s emphasis is on qualifying as many individuals and relays for the state meet at the IU Indy Natatorium as possible.
Coach Thompson emphasizes being fully prepared mentally and physically not only for the team’s success, but also personal success. “When preparation meets opportunity, great things happen.” Said Coach Thompson. He has been intentional about how the team trains to get ready for sectionals. For example, Coach Thompson is focused on maintaining speed and the quality at which his athletes perform, rather than over working them. When asked about mental preparation, Coach Thompson stated, “We emphasize positive self-talk, confidence in the work they’ve put in all seasons, and staying present.”
One thing that the girls swim team has done a great job of this year is supporting their teammates and uplifting one another, and Coach Thompson believes that their team culture and support for one another is a key to the team’s success that will carry over into the state tournament.
“When swimmers believe in themselves and each other, they race with freedom and purpose.” Said Coach Thompson, showing that his team’s unity will play a big role in their run for state.
Beyond the team’s times and placements, the program measures their success by team unity, personal growth and overall, their effort. “Team culture is the secret sauce of elite programs,” said Coach Thompson. With sectionals approaching, the Royals look to carry their strong team culture into the postseason.
