In a sport where success is often driven by results, the Hamilton Southeastern Royals Girls Swim and Dive Team measure their success differently. Rather than just focusing on their results as a program, the Royals are more focused on supporting others, and presenting a solid team culture, showing what it truly means to be a Royal. When asked who their top performers in sectionals were, Coach Jeff Thompson stated, “Our team was the top performer. Without the strength, support, and commitment of the group, none of us are at our best individually.”
Coach Thompson believes that their success as a program comes from their togetherness. “Of course, the girls want to perform well and score points, but regardless, the goal stays the same at every meet. Take care of each other, learn, and compete hard.” That mindset has created a culture where each player can feel supported by their team and compete with confidence.
Swim meets can last many hours, with constant noise from the fans, causing swimmers to feel stress and anxiety, but the Royals have learned to support one another in times of need, “Through constant encouragement, cheering, being there before and after races, listening, hugging, and supporting one another, the girls have learned to swim knowing they have a team of supporters who have their back” Said Coach Thompson.
“We want to build a culture where effort is expected, growth is embraced, and failure is understood as a part of the process.” Said Coach Thompson. Which shows that athletes apart of this team can perform without having to worry about judgement or making a mistake.
With the state championship coming up, February 13th, Coach Thompson believes for HSE Girls Swim and Dive, success isn’t measured by what they place in an event, it’s measured on the culture of the program, and how they support one another.
