The Hamilton Southeastern boys golf program is welcoming a new assistant coach, Coach Barry Gulley, who is excited to bring good energy and high expectations for the upcoming season ahead of them. Coach Gulley has had a lot of experience with the game of golf. “I was first interested in the game of golf from learning to play with my dad in middle school.” Said Coach Gulley. He later played golf for two seasons at Anderson University, as well as being a part of the football team there.
“I began coaching over 25 years ago, initially as a football assistant coach at Richmond High School and loved it.” Said Gulley. He then moved to coaching golf at Heritage Christian High School in 2016. Coach Gulley has also been the teaching professional at Trinity Custom Golf, so he has high level experience with the game of golf. When asked about his gratitude to be coaching at Hamilton Southeastern he stated, “Having the chance to coach at HSE where my kids have graduated and currently attend was an exciting opportunity.”
As a coach, Gulley focuses on helping players grow individually. “Everyone is different and responds differently. I treat them as individuals and equip them with what they need to get better.” Said Gulley. He also explains that he is very focused on the importance of building strong character in his players. “Yes, I want players to be the best golfers they can be, but I want them to be even better people and citizens.”
Coach Gulley believes golf is one of the most mental sports out there and you can face many challenges with it. “Handling pressure is perhaps the most destructive thing in golf. Players will dwell on a bad shot far too long and ruin their scores.” Said Coach Gulley. His philosophy when coaching is, “So what, now what?” This message shows players to focus on what they can control and the shot that they must take next instead of worrying about previous shots.
Looking ahead, Coach Gulley is excited about how far the team can go this season with their potential and for his it being his first ever role as a assistant golf coach at Hamilton Southeastern. “I have gotten to know many of the guys a little already and they are truly a great group of young men,” he said.
“It helps to have a strong connection with your teammates. The closet teams are usually the most successful.” With a very talented team, Coach Gulley and the Royals look to compete at a high level and keep improving throughout every match.
