Lila Oliver and Ava Swedarsky competed a duet to “For Good” from Wicked the Musical this competition season, winning five competitions including an IHSDTA state title. The dance represents the way that they have made each other better dancers and people.
“There was always a little bit of pressure just because people were expecting so much,” Swedarsky said. “But being able to calm down with Lila before performances and just take in the moment was something that really calmed me down.”
As the season continued and the wins piled up, pressure began to build as expectations grew. Their duet showcased much more than precision on the floor. It also highlighted the strong connection they share, which moved many audience members to tears. The bond they have grown together is what helped them through the challenges of being chased by other duets.
“Every single time we performed it people would cry from watching it, that’s something special a dancer feels and a bigger accomplishment than winning,” Oliver said.
The wins were exciting and remaining undefeated was motivating, but their connection meant far more than the results. Their duet reflected a friendship that has continued to grow stronger every day. That is why they had so much success. The wins never mattered as much as the impact they left.
“Before we perform, we always pray,” Swedarsky said. “Before the music started, we would say things such as “We got it” and “Come on let’s do this”.”
The small moments and encouraging words helped both dancers perform at their best. Believing in each other and trusting one another took a strong bond that only the best of friends can possess.
“It honestly didn’t feel real … I will forever miss doing this dance and doing it with my best friend,” Oliver said.

Not only did they shine during their performance, but they shined through to people with their impeccable friendship.
“I remember the last 8 count of our duet for the last time.” Swedarsky said. “It felt relieving knowing that we were able to showcase this routine…We also want people to remember us for having such a good bond and changing each other for the better.”
Both Oliver and Swedarsky put their whole hearts into the dance. It was their last chance to compete a duet together, as Oliver is a senior and Swedarsky is a sophomore. Winning state together was truly the cherry on top to complete their last season competing together.
“I knew the day would come to an end where we wouldn’t share the stage together again, but really treasuring the moments together is something I’ll hold close to my heart.” Swedarsky said.
