The S.A.G.E. Award is presented each month to two seniors who consistently demonstrate leadership, positivity, and encouragement throughout their high school careers. The award honors the life and legacy of Carrie Colglazier, an HSE graduate whose impact continues to inspire kindness, character, and commitment throughout the school community.
The recognitions began in September with Liam McNiven, followed by Jaxson Wanza in November, Liam Powers in December, Will Henning in February, and, most recently, Omar Elsayed in March.
Each of the five honorees has spent all four years at HSE, excelling academically while also competing for the Track & Field program. Their legacy goes far beyond their performances on the track, it’s found in the classrooms they sit in everyday, the teammates they have always supported, and the culture they have helped shape. These five are commonly recognized and loved by their peers and teachers. Known for their work ethic, team-first mentality, these seniors have been able set the standard for future athletes to follow.
“Building a culture both inside and outside of school has been a priority for me over the past four years,” Powers said. “I hope that the athletes and students in the organizations I’ve been a part of continue to grow and keep pushing the limits to get better.”
Whether they’re leading warmups, helping teammates, or pushing themselves academically, these seniors have shown what it truly means to be a royal. Long after their spikes are hung up, their impact on the track, in the hallways, and throughout the community will continue shaping the program in a positive way.
“I try to set the best example I can for not only my brothers on the track team but for my peers in general,” Elsayed said. “I know what it’s like to look up to an upperclassman, so if I can be that person for someone else and inspire them, then I know I’ve done my job.”
Even when they don’t always recognize the positivity and leadership they bring to the school, their teachers and peers do. Those qualities are noticed, appreciated, and honored through their selection as Senior S.A.G.E. Award recipients.
“Omar sees how the forest around him has helped him grow into the best tree he can be. He doesn’t just focus on himself, he includes others and grows alongside them,” said Mrs. Daniels, his S.A.G.E. nominator. “He’s the kind of student who is capable of so much because he knows he hasn’t reached his full potential yet. He still has things he wants to learn, and he’s committed to growing every day.”
Leadership for Liam Mcniven shows up in everything he does, whether he’s collaborating with teammates or guiding his peers through challenging items. He approaches every responsibility with maturity and the desire to help others succeed and not just himself. Those who work with him see just how much his positive character elevates and affects the people around him.
“Liam [The executive direction of public relations media] sets the tone for our entire Public Relations staff,” Mr. DeLisle said. “He is kind and innovative, helping our staff produce their best creative work without compromising the culture we have. I’m so proud of him, and I can’t wait to see what he achieves after he leaves HSE.”
