If you’re not familiar with the sport, track and field. It can be a bit confusing to understand right off the bat. The sport includes multiple different competitive events held on an oval track and or on its surrounding field.
Track needs as much support as every other sport that HSE has, so here is the breakdown of all the events they do. That way next time you’re at a track event, you can further understand and cheer on our fellow royal athletes.
Hurdles:
The event “Hurdles” consist of a series of standing frames over the course of the track that the athletes must jump over. There are two events that the boys do that includes this, the 110-meter high hurdles, and the 300-meter intermediate.
“My favorite event is the 110-meter hurdles. I like it more than the 300 because I’m better at it. Said Sam Irish. “I enjoy the faster pace and the fact that it’s a shorter race, so it feels more explosive and intense instead of drawn out in the 300 hurdles.”
Relay:
A “Relay” is a team competition composed of multiple players running certain distances. The athletes hand off a Baton; a metal circular tube that is passed between teammates. Our school does three distances, the 4×100 meter, the 4×400 meter, and the 4×800 meter.
Dash and Run:
The competition “Dash” Is a shorter distance race that the athletes must run at there full speed from start to finish, while the “Run” is a longer distance race that the athletes have to save their energy to get through the whole race. The dash distances include the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter. And the run distances are 800-meter, 1600-meter, and 3200-meter.
Field events: they are other competitions that involve distance just not in a running aspect like,
– “Shot put and Discus” are both a contest of who can launch a very heavy ball and or disc as far as possible.
“My favorite event that I compete in is the shotput,” said Jordan Fetch. “I’m getting pretty good at it and i’m really starting to enjoy the event.”
– “Long jump and High jump” are both track events measuring the types of leaping abilities. The long jump tests your horizontal jump distance in a sand pit, while high jumps measures your vertical jump distance to pass a raised bar.
– “Pole vault” is an event where you attempt to vault over a high bar with an extremely long and flexible pole held in the athletes’ hands.
