When people look at a softball field, they see either turf or dirt. One offers a more old-school feel, while the other creates a cleaner, more modern appearance. There has always been an unspoken matchup between playing on a dirt field versus playing on a turf field. Why is that?
Artificial turf is an alternative to natural grass. The soil is compacted before a layer of sand is placed on top of the soil so that the turf can lie flat. A layer of plastic is then applied before the turf is installed. Many people prefer turf because it is low maintenance and helps conserve water. Some of the benefits of having a turf field include being cost-effective, eco-friendly, durable, versatile, and easy to play on. However, there are some disadvantages. Turf can become very hot, and water runoff can be an issue. There is also a higher risk of injury because there are no “soft” spots in the infield, and water does not absorb as well as it would in a grass outfield.
“I prefer artificial turf fields, I like to have a consistent level surface without having to worry about fixing the uneven patches and holes while I’m pitching,” Senior Natavia Wright said. “This allows me to focus more on my mechanics and pitch smoothly.”
Having natural grass fields has its own advantages as well. It gives back to the ecosystem, has good traction, and is a good way to determine the field’s condition through the dirt. There are more soft spots on a dirt field, which allows for better landings when sliding and reduces skin impact, while also keeping temperatures cooler.
“One advantage from dirt would be that it’s usually soft and doesn’t get as hot,” Freshman Jaycee McCarter said.
Many players prefer the more traditional feel of the game. Some disadvantages are that the cost is higher, it requires more maintenance, and the dirt is not as consistent as the turf in the infield.
“I would prefer playing on turf fields because it feels more even and cleaner,” McCarter said. “But a disadvantage on turf is it gets way hotter than playing on dirt.”
