The biggest change for Makenna Metric, Senior Girls Lacrosse player, for the season wasn’t her stats or how she played as an individual, it was her confidence. Confidence plays a crucial when it comes to lacrosse and even any sport. It can bring you out as a player and help you keep improving. Without confidence it often holds you back and limits how good you can be as a player. Players must have fast thinking abilities because lacrosse is a fast-moving sport.
“Last season, whenever I was put on the field, I was always nervous to go on because I was scared to make a mistake or not meet expectations” Metric said. “This year, I feel like I’m just trying to have fun, which has made me feel more confident” Metric said.
What people don’t notice about lacrosse is the observation it takes to play the game. Players are constantly doing something, if that’s watching the field reading the other team and anticipating defenders. Observation is often developed quietly during practices, games and even on the sidelines. Observation is a key part of what allows players to think and know whats happening on the field. Makenna focuses on her observation skills even when othes may not notice.
“I constantly remind myself to look around and see the whole field, not just where I am currently on the field” Metric said.
Often what people achieve doesn’t come from being alone. It’s something that is helped shaped by another person. For Makenna, that was her old next-door neighbor. She is from Syracuse; New York and her neighbors had a son who played lacrosse. His dad was like a coach to her and both her and his son would be pushed when practicing. He made her do things she’s not used to like using her non-dominant arm when playing to get better.
“My neighbor pushed me really hard to develop the skills I have and I’m extremely appreciative of him” Metric said.
