HSE Basketball is sending two of its top basketball players to the collegiate level in 2026. Maverick Young is headed to Trine University, a Division III university located in northern Indiana. Luke Weemer will head to the state of Kansas, where he will compete for the DII program at Emporia State University. Both athletes have been standout performers for the boys’ basketball team this season.
Both athletes realized in their high school careers that college basketball was a realistic goal. Weemer said in an interview, “I have always believed in myself, and the goal of playing collegiate basketball was something I have had in my mind since 6th grade”.
Over the years, both players have honed their skills and developed key aspects of their game. Maverick noted, “I have definitely become a stronger facilitator throughout my 4 years here,” and Luke added, “My physical development and the way I play on the court have obviously improved, but the mental side of basketball is where I have seen the most improvement throughout my 4 years here at HSE.” Their dedication has also served as inspiration for younger teammates. When asked to advise the next generation of Royals, Maverick shared, “Don’t let things out of your control effect your play. Somethings you have to let go to keep a clear mind.” and Luke emphasized trusting the process, “It’s not where you start but where you finish, take things a day at a time, enjoy and recognize the moment you are in.”
Choosing a college was an important decision for both players. Young explained, “After a great conversation with the Head Coach and a on-campus visit, I could see myself at the University; it felt like the right decision,” highlighting what drew him to Trine University. Luke reflected on his choice, saying, “He loves the coaching staff, playing style, and the competitive conference he is stepping into at Emporia State. The recruiting process was also an important part of their journey.
Both athletes are aware of the impact they’ve made at HSE High School. Maverick said, I want to be remembered as a player who stayed determined and improved consistently day in and day out” and Luke shared, “I hope I am remembered as a kid who stuck to the process and worked hard to earn my role on the team.”
As Maverick Young heads to Trine University and Luke Weemer begins his journey at Emporia State University, HSE fans can look forward to watching these two talented athletes continue to grow on the court. Both players continue the path that many have set before them, playing at the next level.
